New CNMC Alias Registration Rules for Business SMS: What Direct Telecom Customers Need to Know
From 7 June 2026, new Spanish regulations designed to combat SMS fraud and identity spoofing will come fully into effect. Under Order TDF/149/2025 and the CNMC’s new Alias Registry, businesses and public organisations that send SMS, MMS or RCS messages using an alphanumeric sender name (known as an “alias”) must register that alias with the CNMC before using it.
What is an SMS Alias?
An alias is the sender name that appears instead of a telephone number when you receive a message, for example:
– DIRECTTEL
– MYBANK
– AMAZON
– HEALTHCARE
These aliases are commonly used for appointment reminders, verification codes, delivery notifications, customer updates and marketing messages.
Why Has This Change Been Introduced?
Cybercriminals increasingly use fake sender names to impersonate banks, government departments and legitimate companies. The new Alias Registry allows mobile operators to verify which organisations are authorised to use each sender name, helping to reduce fraud and protect consumers.
What Happens If an Alias Is Not Registered?
From 7 June 2026, Spanish mobile operators will be required to block SMS, MMS and RCS messages that use an alias which is not registered in the CNMC Alias Registry.
Does This Affect Direct Telecom Customers?
Most Direct Telecom customers who use their mobile phones for normal voice calls and personal messaging are not affected.
However, if your business sends SMS, MMS or RCS messages displaying a company name or brand name as the sender instead of a telephone number, you should ensure that the alias is registered before continuing to use it.
Examples include:
– Authentication and verification codes (OTP)
– Appointment reminders
– Delivery notifications
– Customer service alerts
– Marketing and promotional campaigns
How to Register an Alias
The CNMC has created an online registration portal where businesses can register their sender names and associated messaging providers.
You can access the registration process here:

To register, you will typically need:
– Your company details
– Tax identification number (NIF/VAT)
– Information about the alias you wish to use
– Details of the messaging provider(s) authorised to send messages on your behalf
– A valid digital certificate for electronic identification and signing
By registering any business SMS aliases before the deadline, you can help ensure that your messages continue to reach customers without interruption.
